John "Johnny" Stopford (born 23 August 1936 in Wigan district[1] — died 21 August 1998 (aged 61) in Wigan) was an English professional rugby league footballer of the 1950s and '60s who at representative level played for Great Britain, and at club level for Swinton, playing on the Left-Wing, i.e. number 5. Johnny Stopford formed a highly successful Left-Wing partnership with his Centre and fellow Great Britain international Alan Buckley. Stopford toured Australasia in 1966 together with Lions teammates Buckley, Ken Gowers and Dave Robinson.[2]
